FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

What is a community fridge?

A community fridge is a mutual aid initiative that provides access to fresh food (and sometimes non-perishable and hygiene items) to anyone who needs it - no cost, no questions. Community fridges are supported solely on volunteer efforts, and community donations. The goal of a community fridge is to reduce food insecurity, while mitigating food waste.

How does a community fridge work?

A community fridge is a 24/7 hub for sharing food with the concept of share what you can and take what you need. All are welcome to donate to the fridge and anyone can take from the fridge.

Why is a community fridge needed?

According to Feeding America, 8% of families living in Brown County are food insecure. Food insecurity is defined as a lack of access to enough food for every person in a household to live an active and healthy life. One of the major causes of food insecurity includes low-income and poverty. 80% of households in Joannes Park Neighborhood live below the average median income for Brown County and 22% of households in Joannes Park Neighborhood live below the federal poverty level. The Fridge at Joannes Parks works to bridge the gap between food insecurity and food waste as approximately 30% of food is wasted in the United States each year. The Fridge is always open to anyone in need with no questions and no limitations.

Who maintains The Fridge?

The Fridge is a highly collaborative initiative that relies on volunteer efforts to maintain the cleaning, temperature monitoring, and stocking of The Fridge with coordination from Joannes Park Neighborhood Association's Community Fridge Committee. While we appreciate the Green Bay Community Police hosting The Fridge at their Baird St. location, they are not responsible for fridge maintence.
